The 2024 G20 Entrepreneurship Roundtable, organized by the Entrepreneurship Research Center on G20 Economies (G20 center) and supported by the Ministry of Labour and Employment of Brazil and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China, took place on October 15-16 at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) in Beijing.

The roundtable featured in-depth discussions on five key topics: "high-quality and sufficient employment in the digital and sustainable development," "skills and capacities of women and youth in entrepreneurship and employment in the age of artificial intelligence," "growth of enterprises and employment in productivity ecosystems," "public employment services, industrial transformation, entrepreneurship and employment," and "technological revolution, sustainable development and capital markets."

This year's roundtable, themed "Promoting Digital and Sustainable Entrepreneurship for High-Quality and Sufficent Employment," marks the eighth consecutive event since its establishment.

Yu Jiadong，vice minister of Human Resources and Social Security of China, Francisco Macena da Silva, vice minister of the Ministry of Labor and Employment of Brazil, Wang Yan, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the University Council at Tsinghua University, and Dai Xiaochu, deputy director of the International Labor Organization's (ILO) Beijing Office, delivered the opening remarks.

Yu Jiadong emphasized that the Chinese government places great importance on both employment and entrepreneurship. By implementing policies that support entrepreneurship, enhancing entrepreneurial skills, and expanding entrepreneurial service capacities, the government has been working to improve the environment for startups and foster high-quality, sufficient employment. Looking ahead, China will continue to prioritize employment and promote entrepreneurship as a key driver of job creation. He said the G20 center serves as a platform for sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences, and boosting entrepreneurial skills. The center's contributions were highly commended at the G20 Labor and Employment Ministers' Meeting in July, and this roundtable is a practical step toward realizing the outcomes of that meeting.

Francisco Macena da Silva delivers a speech.

Francisco Macena da Silva said Brazil, as the G20 president, places great emphasis on entrepreneurship. He said that the entrepreneurship-driven economic model not only creates jobs but also upholds workers' rights and dignity. He urged G20 economies to prioritize the quality of employment, aiming to create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for all.

Wang Yan, representing Tsinghua University, warmly welcomed delegates and guests from various countries to the roundtable. He highlighted the university's initiatives in advancing digital and green education. WANG emphasized the significance and urgency of this year's theme, noting that digital and sustainable entrepreneurship address key global challenges related to entrepreneurship and employment. He added that combining these entrepreneurial approaches with the goal of high-quality employment offers fresh perspectives and solutions to tackle employment policy and service challenges, which are vital for advancing the G20's efforts in entrepreneurship and employment.

Dai Xiaochu emphasized that this roundtable plays a key role in advancing the priorities set by the 2024 G20 Employment Working Group's and the outcomes of the G20 Labor and Employment Ministers' Meeting. He said the ILO recognizes the importance of entrepreneurship in fostering economic growth and creating decent jobs. It supports entrepreneurship for all groups across all demographic groups, regardless of background or gender, while promoting the transformation of entrepreneurial ecosystems. "By harnessing opportunities in digital and sustainable entrepreneurship," he said: "we can not only achieve high-quality and sufficient employment but also promote social cohesion and environmental sustainability."

Chen Liming, chairman of the Greater China Region of the World Economic Forum, delivers a keynote speech.

Chen Liming's keynote speech, titled "Artificial Intelligence and Digital Work: A Global Path for Promoting Sustainable and High-Quality Entrepreneurship," emphasized the rapid advancement of digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, remote work, and international digital cooperation, as key drivers behind a global resurgence of entrepreneurial activity. He explained how these technologies enable entrepreneurs to collaborate and innovate globally, creating new job opportunities across. Chen called for greater investment in digital technology, innovation, and sustainable development, along with policy innovation and skill development, to ensure that underrepresented groups can also benefit from the expanding digital economy. He stressed the importance of stronger global cooperation to achieve these goals.

Sara Elder, head of the Economic Policy Department and Employment Policy Department at ILO, delivers a keynote speech.

Sara Elder presented the findings of the ILO's newly released "Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024" report. She noted that the report calls for more effective investments in youth employment, with a particular focus on improving opportunities for young women. Elder also highlighted the importance of strengthening mechanisms that facilitate smooth transitions for youth into the labor market. The report advocates for integrating youth employment with social protection measures and calls for addressing global inequalities through enhanced international cooperation, public-private partnerships, and development financing.

Gao Jian, a professor in the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Tsinghua SEM and director of the G20 center, delivers a keynote speech.

Gao Jian addressed the advancements in digital and sustainable entrepreneurship across G20 economies. He highlighted that G20 governments are increasingly emphasizing the significance, strategic positioning, and ecosystem development of digital entrepreneurship. He also discussed measures being taken to promote sustainable entrepreneurship, particularly in the areas of green and inclusive entrepreneurship. He noted that the convergence of digital and sustainable entrepreneurship is expected to continue growing and stressed the need for G20 economies to deepen their commitment and increase investment in fostering these entrepreneurial forms.

The event was attended by government officials from G20 member nations, scholars from research institutions, entrepreneurs, representatives from venture capital and entrepreneurial service organizations, and delegates from international organizations such as the ILO, World Economic Forum, United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), UN Women, UNICEF, UNESCO, and the International Organization of Employers (IOE).
