BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met Wednesday with overseas members of the Advisory Board of Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management.

In the meeting, Xi expressed appreciation for the advisors' contribution to China's economic and management education.

"Being world-renowned entrepreneurs, you have penetrating views on the world economic situation and China's economic development, so I would like to hear your advice," he said to the advisors.

David Rubenstein, chairman of the Advisory Board and co-founder and co-CEO of the Carlyle Group, and John Thornton, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Institution, delivered remarks on behalf of the advisors.

They briefed Xi on the board's work, saying that China has scored remarkable achievements in development and greatly promoted global economic growth.

Having confidence in China's future development, they said they are full of expectation to expand business in China, adding that they would continue to contribute to education and economic development in the country.

Xi briefed the advisors on China's economic development and reform.

There has been steady economic progress this year, he said, explaining that GDP growth and other major economic indicators are within the expected range.

New progress has been made in industrial restructuring and reducing regional gaps, and people's livelihood has been improved, according to Xi.

On the reform process, the president said comprehensive reforms will be planned out during the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee due in November.

"We must properly handle the relations between reform, development and stability, and with greater political courage and wisdom, further open our minds, unleash and develop social productivity, and enhance the creative forces of the society," said Xi.

The president also said it is China's basic national policy to invigorate the country through science and technology.

China will adhere to the concept that science and technology constitutes a primary productive force and talents are the first resources, absorb advanced international experience and promote education reform so as to cultivate more and better talents as well as make more room for them to display their talent, he added.

Vice Premier Liu Yandong also attended the meeting.
