The Advisory Board of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (2014-15) Announced — New Board Members Include Facebook’s Zuckerberg

Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) has recently announced the Advisory Board member list for academic year 2014-15. The Advisory Board has included three new members and replaced five incumbents. The three new members are: Carlos Brito, CEO of Anheuser-Busch InBev, Ginni Rometty, Chairman, President and CEO of IBM, and Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook, Inc. The 5 incumbents are succeeded by Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors Company, Michael Corbat, CEO of Citigroup Inc., Mark Fields, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company, Geoffrey Garrett, Dean, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Their predecessors were replaced due to job changes.

The 3 new board members are from multinational corporations that have significant global influence. Anheuser-Busch InBev is the world’s largest brewer and is one of the top five consumer products companies in the world; it operates a portfolio of more than 200 brands and occupies either the first or second position in terms of market share in more than 20 countries around the world. Carlos Brito, who became the CEO of Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2004, is a global business leader and was included in the Fortune’s 2013 Executive Dream Team. IBM is the world's largest IT and business solutions company. Its current Chairman, President and CEO, Ginni Rometty, is the first woman to head the 103-year-old company. She has been ranked first in Fortune’s 2014 “50 Most Powerful Women” list and was featured on the magazine’s cover. Mark Zuckerberg is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Facebook, the world’s largest social network, which he founded in 2004. As an entrepreneur and innovator, Zuckerberg has had a profound impact in changing the way people communicate and connect with each other and was recently named one of the Global Business Elite Under 40 by Fortune magazine.

Three New Members to the Advisory Board of Tsinghua SEM (2014-15)

The five board members who took over from their predecessors are also leaders in business and education. Mary Barra, who was appointed by General Motors Company to be its CEO in December 2013, is the first female CEO of a major global automaker. Michael Corbat is the current CEO of Citigroup, a position he has held since December 2012. Mark Fields was appointed as the President and CEO of Ford Motor Company in July 2014. Geoffrey Garrett became the dean of The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in July 2014. Doug McMillon became the youngest President and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. since its founder, Sam Walton, in February 2014.

The Advisory Board of Tsinghua SEM currently has five female members. In particular, in Fortune’s 2014 “50 Most Powerful Women” list, the top 3 are all members of the Advisory Board, with Ginni Rometty, Chairman, President and CEO of IBM, Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, and Indra K. Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, taking the first, second and third positions, respectively.

The Advisory Board of Tsinghua SEM has many members whose companies are ranked top 10 in the various rankings published by Fortune magazine in 2014; these rankings include: the ‘Fortune Global 500’ list which ranked Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Royal Dutch Shell and BP in the first, second and sixth positions, respectively; the ‘Fortune 500’ list which saw Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Apple Inc., General Motors Company, and Ford Motors Company taking the first, fifth, seventh and eighth positions, respectively; and the ‘Most Admired Companies’ list which featured Apple Inc. and The Coca-Cola Company on the number one and number six spots, respectively.

Initiated by ZHU Rongji, the Founding Dean of Tsinghua SEM, the Advisory Board of Tsinghua SEM was officially established in October 2000; board members include chairmen, presidents or CEOs of multinational corporations with significant global influence, deans from world-renowned business schools, distinguished Chinese entrepreneurs, and Chinese government officials for the economic and financial affairs. The Advisory Board provides advice to help develop Tsinghua SEM into a world-class institution of higher education, promotes faculty development, supports the establishment of research centers, and contributes to the scholarships for students. Found Dean ZHU Rongji has served as the Honorary Chairman of the Advisory Board since its inception. The current Chairman of the Board is David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, The Carlyle Group, and the current Vice Chairman is CHEN Jining, President of Tsinghua University.
