【摘要】Although prior research largely provides evidence for a statistically significant positive linear relationship between IT investments and firm innovation performance, some studies also report non-significant findings for the same relationship. We intend to resolve this conundrum by maintaining that investment in IT itself requires a costly adjustment creating hindrances to the firm’s existing operations. Therefore, we suggest that IT investment’s effects on innovation performance are likely to be associated with diminishing returns due to dynamic adjustment costs (DAC). We hypothesize that the relationship between IT investment and firm innovation performance is likely to be of an inverted-U shape. Furthermore, we propose that this relationship is likely to be negatively moderated by simultaneous investment in human capital (HC) resources owing to higher coordination costs and that this negative moderation effect is likely to be exacerbated in high clockspeed industries. Empirical analysis of a unique data set from 404 firms, representing all industry sectors in the German economy yield robust evidence to corroborate our hypotheses. Our study contributes to IS research by bringing DAC of coordinating investment in IT and HC to the forefront and by examining the innovation performance impacts of IT using nonlinear models.
