【摘要】Consciousness is the ability to experience: to see, hear, smell, taste, desire, enjoy, suffer, love, hate, fear, intend, be excited or saddened, … . The "how" of consciousness – its physiological mechanism – is not at all understood; it remains a deep mystery, the last great frontier of science. Here we discuss not the "how," but the "why" of consciousness: the adaptive function it serves, the evolutionary advantage it bestows. Briefly, we argue that consciousness enables incentives to work, thus shortcutting and simplifying processes that would otherwise be far too complex to realize in practice. However, the "how" remains a deep mystery.
